The Foundation

The laboratory was founded at the beginning of the eighties of the last century at the High Institute of Applied Science and Technology in Damascus, in response to the growing need to a advanced national laboratory which is able to perform researches and environmental analysis, as well as offering advice and scientific advice to the national authorities in different environmental issues, especially those relating to water pollution, air and soil and the marine environment in Syria.

The laboratory offers many services, and also performs researches and various studies, for the benefit of institutions and laboratories in both the public and private sectors, and for the benefit of society in general.

The laboratory sections:

The laboratory consists of three sections:

  • Air pollution laboratory, and contains a mobile vehicle for continuous monitoring.
  • Chemical analysis laboratory.
  • Analysis of bacterial laboratory.

The laboratory provides the following services:

  • Monitor the air quality in urban and industrial areas.
  • Monitor the work environment and study the workers exposure to pollution.
  • Identify a broad spectrum of pollution in surface water and groundwater and the marine environment.
  • Analysis of the residual effect of pollutants such as: heavy metals and organochlorine pesticides in watercourses and municipal solid waste
  • Environmental Consultation
  • Organize workshops and specialized training courses.
  • Preparing laboratories for accreditation according to international standard ISO 17025
  • Verify the performance of equipment, and set it if necessary, such as emissions measuring equipments from the flue and the gases in the work environment
  • Measuring the conductivity of water, and acidity (pH), oxygen and dissolved salts, and electrolytes measurement by using optical spectroscopy, measuring organic material in a gas bu using chromatography method, and measuring the metal by using atomic absorption technology, ..., etc..
